Kathmandu Airport Nepal

The plane crashed during a second attempt to land after an unexpected turn in cloudy weather, they added.

A spokesman for the Dhaka-based U.S. -Bangla Airlines said 71 people, including four crew members, were on board the aircraft.

In a press briefing, Imran Asif, CEO of US-Bangla Airlines, said the pilot of the aircraft, Abid Sultan, was injured and was undergoing treatment.

The airline has blamed air traffic control, with the chief executive of the airlines saying that there were wrong directions from the tower and that their pilot was not at fault. Less than a minute later, the pilot said he was ready to land from the south, and the controller cleared the plane to land from that direction.

Nepal has a poor air safety record and today's crash follows a series of accidents at Kathmandu.

The reason behind the crash of the 17-year old aircraft is yet to be established, but the rescuers and other aviation staffs have recovered the black box of the aircraft.

Out of the passengers, 33 were Nepalese, 32 were Bangladeshis while one each was from China and Maldives.

"The plane was going up down, right and left, up I thought that was some air traffic only".

After hearing the recording between the tower and the pilots, "we assumed that there was no negligence by our pilots", he said. The airport was closed for a few hours. Everyone just froze looking at it.

According to Raj Kumar Chettri, general manager of the airport, flight BS-211, which covered the Dhaka-Kathmandu route, collided with a fence of the facility when it descended on the runway. "It was just awful".

US-Bangla operates Boeing 737-800 and smaller Bombardier Dash 8 planes, the model of the plane that crashed.

The Dhaka-based US-Bangla Airlines is a private carrier that launched in July 2014 with the motto "Fly Fast Fly Safe".

Offering his condolences, Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli promised an immediate investigation. The airlines is a unit of the US-Bangla Group, a US Bangladeshi joint venture company.

Kathmandu airport lies in a bowl-shaped valley with the Himalayas to the north, making it a notoriously challenging place to land.

"The pilot was given the clearance to approach for landing from 02, or the southern side".

At least 50 people have been killed after a plane crashed as it landed at Kathmandu airport in Nepal.

Just two months earlier, a Thai Airways aircraft had crashed near the same airport, killing 113 people.
