Red Cross and local fire departments recommend checking smoke detectors

WSFA 12 News is teaming up with the American Red Cross to launch its"Sound the Alarm Save a Life campaign
With Daylight Savings beginning on Sunday, fire officials are urging citizens to check something else in their homes in addition to the time on their clocks.
March 10, residents will be setting their clocks ahead one hour before going to bed for the start of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m. March 11. It also is a good time to check the carbon monoxide detector.
The Red Cross responds to almost 64,000 disasters every year, most of which are home fires.
This year, 25 Georgians have died in 21 residential fires, with none of the houses having a working smoke alarm.
Join this Red Cross effort today by volunteering to install smoke alarms in your community, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires. Over time, sensors lose the ability to detect smoke.
Installation is easy, and can be accomplished by just about anyone.
"Smoke alarms are the first warning sign of a fire, which give you potentially lifesaving seconds to escape", State Fire Marshal Jeff A. Hussey said. In one-quarter of home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present, but did not sound.
It is also recommended that residents test smoke alarms by pushing the test button, planning "two ways out" and practicing escape routes with the entire family.
Install smoke alarms. If someone doesn't have smoke alarms, install them. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.
Dead batteries cause one-quarter of the smoke alarm failures. In fact, surveys show that nearly one-third of all smoke detectors fall into that category.
For the best protection, equip your home with a combination of ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms or dual-sensor alarms. A phone bank will be held Monday to help answer questions and schedule a date and time to have alarms installed.
While you're busy tonight setting and resetting your clocks, watches, coffee makers, microwave ovens and other devices, keep in mind to check your smoke detectors.
