Five injured as fire breaks out at chemical factory in Palghar

Five injured, three dead after fire breaks out in Maharashtra's Palghar chemical factory; rescue operations underway

The explosion was as strong as it shattered the window glasses of buildings as far as 3 kilometers away and felt in 8-10 kilometers radius. "Search and rescue operation is going on", the SP said. The three deceased, identified as Pintu Kumar Gautam, Janu Adaria and Alok Nath suffered severe blast impact.

The fire damaged six factories before it was brought under control but a few areas were still burning, Manjunath Singe, a district police superintendent said on Twitter. All injured were shifted to a private hospital in Boisar, the officials informed.

The fire tenders were trying to extinguish the fire that was rapidly spreading in the surrounding areas.

As per reports, the factory manufactures speciality chemicals and cosmetic preservatives.

Locals claim at least 22 tankers, of varying capacity between 100-200 liters, burst due to the fire in all the factories. Three of them are said to be in a critical condition. The MIDC site is host to 1,100 chemical plants. Collector Narnavre said: "The Department of Industrial Safety was formed to look into industrial compliances post last year's industrial fire incident in Wada Taluka, Palghar".

As a precautionary measure, roads have been cordoned off, and power to 57 industrial units (20 high tension (HT) units and 37 low tension (LT) units) near the spot have been cut off as the two 11 KV each feeders have been shut, said an MSEDCL official.
