Miscreant attempts to damage Gandhi statue in Kerala, flees on seeing crowd

Statues of Gandhi and BR Ambedkar vandalised in Kerala and Tamil Nadu

A series of incidents of desecration of statues of various leaders, including Ambedkar, rationalist E V Ramasamy "Periyar" and Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, have been reported from different parts of the country over the past few days.

While the reports of Gandhi's statue being vandalised were surfacing, it was found that another statue of Dr BR Ambedkar was defaced by unknown miscreants in the north part of Chennai. The Taliparamba Police detained a man in connection with the incident.

According to reports, the hooligans, who are yet to be identified, broke the spectacles on Gandhi's statue before getting away in Thaliperambu area of the city. The investigating police have ruled out political involvement in the vandalism incident. There were reports that in Tripura itself, another statue of Lenin was vandalised in the state. Six members of a left-wing student organisation named "Radicals" have been detained by the police in the incident.
