BJP wants NPP to take lead to form non-Cong govt in Meghalaya
Eleven other Cabinet ministers were sworn in, including senior BJP legislator Alexander Laloo Hek and first-timer Samlin Malngiang (HSPDP).
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP President Amit Shah are likely to arrive in Meghalaya on Tuesday to participate in the swearing-in ceremony of the NPP-led government in the state, Assam BJP leaders said.
The NPP, though an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Manipur, did not have a seat-sharing arrangement with it in the state before the polls.
This discontentment came a day after the HSPDP agreed to form a coalition government in the state led by the NPP with the support of UDP, People's Democratic Front (PDF), BJP and one independent.
Earlier, six MLAs of United Democratic Party chose to extend their support to the alliance.
After garnering the support of 34 MLAs in a 30 member assembly, NPP's Sangma was invited by the Governor Ganga Prasad to form the government in the state. Later in the evening, Nagaland governor P B Acharya said after a meeting with Rio that the NDPP leader has the majority and should form the government.
Conrad Sangma took over the reins of NPP after his father passed away in 2016.
He further said the BJP is not a communal party and in the BIP ruled states there is no incident of communal violence rather the opposition who brands BJP as communal are themselves communal.
"Tell-tale signs of BJP's blind quest for power superseding the stability of the region, propagation of democracy, nipping the separatist tendencies and ignoring core issues of region are already visible", Surjewala said.
The governor advised Sarkar, who was chief minister since 1998, to continue until the new chief minister takes oath.
"With just two seats, the BJP has usurped power in Meghalaya, through a proxy". "The real challenge and the real work starts now".
The Congress emerged as the single-largest party in the state winning 21 seats, but failed to cobble up a coalition with other regional outfits.
According to power sharing formula, UDP leader and former chief minister Donkupar Roy is likely to be the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
