UN Nuclear Watchdog: Iran-Accord Failure Would Be 'Great Loss'

International Atomic Energy Agency director general Yukiya Amano said Iran was, as of today, "implementing its nuclear-related commitments" under the deal.

The 2015 accord between France, Britain, Germany, Russia, China and the United States gave Iran relief from economic sanctions in return for curbs to its nuclear programme, allowing Tehran to talk trade with Europe for the first time in years.

Since the lifting of the sanctions in January 2016, French automakers have piled into Iran's resurgent market, helping turn around a period of slipping sales, which occurred when they left the country in 2012.

"Iran's missile program will continue nonstop and foreign powers have no right to intervene on this issue", the semiofficial Tasnim news agency quoted Masud Jazayeri as saying.

Hardline media reacted angrily to Le Drian's remarks with headlines like "Rude guest" and "Weapons of mass seduction lands in Tehran" while highlighting Iran's determination to go ahead with its missile program.

During his visit, Le Drian also inaugurated an exhibition called "The Louvre in Tehran" at the Iranian National Museum.

Iran has stayed within the deal's restrictions since Trump took office but has fired diplomatic warning shots at Washington in recent weeks.

In 2017, France was Iran's second biggest trade partner in the European Union. Planemaker Airbus, oil major Total and automobile manufacturers Peugeot and Renault have signed deals, all at risk if Trump walks out of the accord.

Despite their differences, Iran has welcomed French efforts to re-engage economically and politically.

Iran will not negotiate over its ballistic missiles until the United States and Europe dismantle their nuclear weapons, a top Iranian military official said on Saturday, keeping up the Islamic republic's tough stance on the issue.

"There are programs for missiles that can travel several thousand kilometers, which are not compatible with UN Security Council resolutions and which exceed the needs of defending Iran's borders", Le Drian told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

As far as this project is concerned, on the day that North Korea claimed it had successfully tested an ICBM capable of reaching the US, Iran announced it was bolstering ties with Pyongyang, which leads to speculation that such a move could bring Iran closer to its goal of acquiring a missile that could reach American shores.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi described Iran's missile program as "fully defensive and deterrent in nature to safeguard the country's territorial integrity, independence and freedom", asserting that Iran's missile program is not in violation of the United Nations resolutions and rules.
