At least 30 people have been killed in western India when a truck carrying members of a wedding party crashed off a bridge and plunged into a large drainage ditch, local media reported.

A total of 60 persons belonging to Anida village were travelling in the truck for the wedding at the bride's home in Totam village in Botad district. You all know that the accident took place near Ranghola on Rajkot-Bhavnagar state highway. Initial investigations indicated that the driver had lost control, causing the lorry to swerve off the bridge and fall 8m onto a dry riverbed.

Family members said that the groom, Vijay Vaghela, 23, was driving in a separate auto with his brother at the time of the accident and that they did not tell him about the accident until after the wedding ceremony.

The death toll had climbed to 30, Jadeja informed the Assembly in Gandhinagar later, adding that while 26 people died on the spot, four succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. At least six people were critically injured.

The accident took place between 7.30 am and 7.45 am. "May those who have been injured recover at the earliest", the Prime Minister's Office wrote in a tweet.

Authorities have announced financial aid of 400,000 rupees ($6,148) to the family of each of the deceased.
