J&K: Militants attack Army's Mobile Vehicle Check Post in Shopian, one killed

A terrorist was among the four people who were killed in a firing incident in South Kashmir's Shopian district, police said on Sunday.

Police is on the spot and have started legal formalities. "Also the three person who were accompanying the terrorist were found to be dead", he said in a statement issued here.

The terrorist killed was identified as Shahid Ahmad Dar, a resident of Shopian, and a weapon was found with him.

"A joint Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) was sacked upon by terrorists near Pahnoo village in Shopian district of south Kashmir at 8 pm today (Sunday)", a Defence spokesman said in Srinagar.

However, the Srinagar-based Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said the three were over-ground workers (OGW) and accomplices of the slain militant.

The Army could not immediately furnish the details of the circumstances in which the accomplices were killed.

Sources have identified the three civilians as Suhail Khalil Wagay of Pinjoora, Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Khan of Malikgund and Shahnawaz Ahmad Wagay of Trenz, Shopian.

Earlier clashes also broke out between troops and youth on Sunday after government forces launched a cordon and search operation in Rahmoo village of district Pulwama.

But local residents alleged that this was the second time this year that civilians have been killed in army firing and the incident could spark unrest.
