Mueller Files New Fraud Charges Against Paul Manafort
23 February 2018, 02:08 | Frank Carlson
Chicago bank executive investigated as part of Mueller's Russia probe: report
The new indictment comes a week after Mueller filed charges against 13 Russians, accusing them of a vast conspiracy to undermine the US presidential election.
The CEO of The Federal Savings Bank, Steve Calk, is denying a news report that he was part of a quid pro quo arrangement with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
A long-time Washington and global political consultant, Manafort served as Trump's election campaign chairman from June to August 2016, with Gates his deputy.
It could also signal Manafort or Gates have reached an agreement with prosecutors.
Gates, meanwhile, is reportedly negotiating a plea deal, according to multiple media outlets. Russian Federation has denied meddling in the campaign and Trump has denied any collusion took place.
Both men have pleaded not guilty to the earlier charges.
Mr. Manafort and a longtime business associate, Richard Gates, were indicted in late October by the special counsel's office on charges of conspiring against the USA, money laundering, failing to file reports on foreign bank and financial accounts, and making false statements connected to their work for a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine.
Instead, they grew from the work Manafort and Gates performed for Russia-backed former Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych between about 2006 and 2014.
On Tuesday, Skadden Arps released a statement saying it had fired van der Zwaan a year ago, and it "has been cooperating with authorities in connection with this matter".
The latest developments in Mueller's Russian Federation investigation also follow a guilty plea from a London-based lawyer, Alex van der Zwaan, who was an associate of Gates.
He also told the agents that he did not know why an email between him and Person A was not produced to Mueller's office.
On Tuesday it became known that allegations making false statements to the FBI in the investigation of cases of alleged Russian interference in the American elections in 2016 charged a former employee of a law firm new York's Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher & Flom Alex van der Zvanu.
Mueller explained in a status report that some of the new charges could not be brought in Washington without the approval of the defendants.
