Google's Area 120 Testing Smart Reply Feature for Android Text Messages

Google is bringing Instant one-tap replies to messaging apps

A Google R&D team wants to bring Smart Reply to all your chat apps

Google is working on bringing smart replies, the feature which it first introduced to Inbox back in 2015, to all messaging apps so that people can reply to friends with just the tap of a button from their notifications. But as a hint of how it would work, Area 120 said the plan is to offer Smart Replies right into the notifications tab, supposedly when the user receives a notification from the above-mentioned third-party chat apps.

One example cited in the email is using your location to send and instant response to the enquiry 'when can you be home?'.

Google's Area 120 groups says its Reply app works with Hangouts, Allo, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Android Messages, Skype, Twitter DMs, and Slack.

Google's Smart Reply uses the firm's neural network to intelligently analyse a message's content to suggest an appropriate response. Though it's fairly limited, as is the Smart Reply integration on Project Fi. But the feature has not been made available to all Android Messages users as of yet.

The included screenshots in Reply's announcement (delivered to testers via email) show Reply working within Google Hangouts and Android Messages.

Israel loses warplane under Syrian fire, accuses Iran of drone infiltration
An air force chopper picked up the wounded crew and transported them to the trauma unit of Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. A spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry said, "The claim that an unmanned aircraft penetrated into Israel is false".

Additionally, Reply can determine when you're driving and reply to any texts to let people know you're behind the wheel, messages that Reply determines are more important than others (such as "Where are you?!") can still notify you even if your phone is on silent, and vacation responses will automatically be sent out if someone tries to contact you and Reply sees that you've noted on your calendar that you're taking some time off. The newly announced project is simply called "Reply" and will be initially available to Android users.

One of the features of Inbox and Gmail that Google rolled out a couple of years ago is Smart Reply.

No release date is now known, but users can fill out a form for a chance to beta test the feature. There is also the question of whether or not other developers want to integrate Google's features into their apps or if it would be better to develop their own, but what do you guys think?

The other features that Reply brings include Do not disturb.
