When Rocky River native Red Gerard won the gold medal in men's Olympic slopestyle snowboarding, many were surprised the 17-year-old did so well in an event stacked with talent.

Gerard finished third among the second heat, with a score of 82.55 on his first qualifying run. When the videoboard flashed 86.00, Gerard celebrated becoming the youngest American snowboarder to win Olympic gold.

"I've never really found myself thinking about [the Olympics]", Gerard said previous year, according to NBC.

The start list is in reverse order of qualifying, so Parrot will go last in each of the three runs, with top score determining the victor.

This is the second Olympic bronze for the 24-year-old McMorris, who is coming back from life-threatening injuries suffered in a backcountry crash less than a year ago.

It was the United States' first gold at the Pyeongchang Games and Gerard made the most of it.

Rory McIlroy responds to Jason Day's desire comment
McIlroy was four-under through 15 holes before suffering a bogey on the 16th, when his wayward drive finished in a waste area. Americans dominate the leaderboard with Kevin Streelman and Beau Hossler leading the way after round 1 on seven under par.

"It's frustrating, it's disappointing and I can't really explain the Dutch sweep again", Blondin said.

"I was doing something in my run the judges really didn't like so we are going to have to look back at my scores and figure out what was going on because, like I say they didn't like something in my room that I am not totally sure about", said the American teenager.

"I'm mind blown", Gerard said. "I'm pretty sure I saw a video of them shotgunning beers at 8:30 a.m., so I'm pretty sure they are doing just fine". "I grew up watching the X Games and Dew Tour".

It could have been McMorris, Max Parrot or Seb Toutant getting Canada's third snowboarding gold and its biggest since Ross Rebagliati won the very first Olympic snowboard event in Nagano in 1998 (and was briefly stripped of it for a marijuana positive). "I was able to watch Mark [McMorris, a fellow Canadian snowboarder] land the most hard run of the day, but it wasn't clean, and he was scored really low because of it". Here is the full medal count, via the Olympics. "I never really realized how big it is".

"It was awesome. I just told myself that I want to land a run and I was a little bummed on my first two runs because I fell a couple of times", he said.

Gerard, renowned for his prowess on rails - thanks in partly to the terrain park in the backyard of his family's Silverthorne home - wove a creative line through the course's byzantine rail section, which offered myriad opportunities for riders.
