Jammu and Kashmir: Militants attack family quarters of Army camp in Sunjwan, two injured

Army camp attack

An Islamist militant group stormed the family quarters of an army camp in the Sunjuwan area of Jammu on Saturday morning, killing two soldiers and injuring nine others including five women and children, officials said.

Two Junior Commissioned Officers (JFOs) have been killed and six others, including a colonel and a girl, wounded in the predawn terror attack and subsequent fighting. Ministry of Defence Spokesman in Jammu Lt-Col Devendra Anand told waiting mediapersons outside the main gate of the military station late on Saturday, "in the ongoing operations in Sunjwan, the Army has killed three heavily armed terrorists".

The terrorists were wearing army fatigues and carrying AK-56 rifles, ammunition and hand grenades.

The terrorists, who attacked the Army camp in Sunjwan, located on the outskirts of Jammu city, were believed to be from the "Afzal Guru squad" of JeM.

Three or four suspected members of the Jaish-e-Mohammed group attacked the camp at around 05:00 a. m. (23:30 GMT on Friday), The Indian Express reported. Two of them are in hospital in critical conditions, they said.

United States claims self-defense in strikes on Syrian-backed forces
USA officials say no Americans were injured or killed in the attack by the pro-regime forces. A rare United States airstrike in Syria has killed approximately 100 pro-government troops.

The national highway, which was closed in view of terror attack, was thrown open for the traffic in the afternoon later while the security forces cordoned the area of terror site.

While there was no action around the main entrance and vehicles were moving along the Jammu-Lakhanpur bypass in front of the camp, army personnel in bullet-proof vehicles engaged in the operation to rescue people from the family quarters in the rear side of the base. The message allegedly said the attacks were a revenge for Afzal Guru's hanging.

Even before the militant attack on the Pathankot airbase in January 2016, security agencies had intercepted conversations between four JeM operatives and their handlers in Pakistan that suggested an imminent attack on a defence installation in Punjab.

With the death of the third militant, the army sources say the operation is not over yet.

Chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, expressed anguish over the militant attack and the loss of life caused in it. In a tweet, she said, "Deeply disturbed by the terrorist attack in #Sunjwan today. Militants number is not known as of now", said Jammu Inspector General of Police (IGP) S. D. Singh Jamwal.
