Intel's Winter Olympics Light Show Featured A Record-Breaking 1218 Drones
11 February 2018, 05:14 | Kara Nash
The Opening Ceremony of the Pyeong Chang Games was a spectacle
According to Intel (and the Guinness Book of World Records), the 1,218-drone flight set a record for "most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously", more than doubling Intel's previous high water mark of 500 drones flying together in a performance in Germany in 2016. The video kicks off with drones, against the night sky, lighting up in the form of a snowboarder.
"And while more drones does provide a broader canvas, it perhaps more importantly affords a better sense of depth". The drones then disperse and quickly transform into Olympics rings as they fly through the sky.
"The Olympics are a time when the sports and entertainment industries are buzzing with record-setting performances, so it was the ideal stage for Intel Shooting Star drones and our team to set their own kind of record", said Intel's Natalie Cheung in a press statement. The performance also surpassed the 300-drone salute that was pre-recorded with Lady Gaga for Super Bowl LI past year.
While the drone performance did play a major part in giving the PyeongChang Olympics Opening Ceremony a major tech spin, some South Koreans expressed regret that the foundational technology came from a foreign company.
Each of Intel's foam and plastic drones is equipped with LED lights that can create more than 4 billion color combos. International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said Saturday that the drones were not deployed Friday night because of an "impromptu logistical change".
Though the show presented during the opening ceremony wasn't actually live-it was reportedly filmed in December-the spectacle was impressive. The athletes, dignitaries, and spectators at the stadium in Pyeongchang never got to see the drone show.
"We are excited to be part of the Olympic Movement to integrate Intel's innovative technologies to advance the Olympics Games experience for fans around the world".
