Trump Saw A Military Parade In France And Now He Wants One Of His Very Own

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed Trump's request for a parade on Tuesday.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Wednesday that military officials were putting together some options for a parade and would present them to Trump for a decision.

There are many people who see the parade idea otherwise, saying it's a show of force out of line with American tradition.

TODD HARRISON: They've said so many times how military readiness is being harmed and how they are falling behind in maintenance and training activities, and this does nothing to further the readiness of the military.

Gen. Mark Hertling told TIME that a military parade goes against US democratic traditions. From all accounts, we're doing this because France has an annual Bastille Day Parade and when Trump visited France recently, he was invited to be in the reviewing stand alongside President Macron. "Confidence is silent. Insecurities are loud".

The White House is attempting to downplay President Trump's order to the Pentagon to hold a military parade that would head straight down Pennsylvania Avenue.

The last United States military parade was in 1991 under George HW Bush, and celebrated the victory over Iraq and the liberation of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm.

Some lawmakers chafed at the prospective costs. "If we really want to honor our troops and support them, pass the defense budget".

"This is not about a dictatorship". The parade featured tanks and other armored military vehicles and a flyover by jets that streaked the sky with red, white, and blue smoke.

It's impossible to produce a documentary about a dictator and not include footage of military parades.

"It was a tremendous day, and to a large extent because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July 4th in Washington down Pennsylvania Avenue", Trump said.

Democrats, meanwhile, were sharply critical of the parade proposal, arguing it was a waste of money and a vanity exercise for Trump. She also called on Trump to use funds intended for the parade to assist veteran's health care. Everybody knows it, and we don't need to show it off.

"A lot of countries have histories of longtime military conquest and the power and strength of the military supporting the government, but since our inception that has not been who we are", he said.

One option being considered is to hold the parade in November in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War I on November 11, 1918, the official said. "That would be cheesy and project weakness", Graham told reporters on Wednesday.
