How Brexit could impact 12 United Kingdom regions

09 February 2018, 05:18 | Frank Carlson

UK analysis shows big economic hit from Brexit

Michel Barnier the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator says checks on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic will be “unavoidable” if the UK leaves the customs union

Jude Kirton-Darling, Labour MEP for the North East of England, added: "As disquieting as this may be, it is unfortunately only the beginning of a string of terrible news to come out of the leaked impact assessment papers, and the direct result of the Tories being incapable of negotiating a Brexit deal that won't drain all money and economic prospects out of the North East".

The UK as a whole is predicted to have 8 per cent lower GDP with no deal, 5 per cent lower if the UK negotiated a free trade deal, and 2 per cent lower if it remains aligned with the rules of the European Union single market.

"The Tories must now explain why they accused the Scottish Government of scaremongering when their own government was covering up similar findings".

In the West Midlands there could be a 13% decline in GDP, while Northern Ireland could suffer a 12% fall.

The regional figures are likely to be seized upon by backers of a soft Brexit to protect the economy, as Theresa May holds crunch meetings of her inner "war cabinet" of senior ministers on Wednesday and Thursday to thrash out what kind of trade relationship the United Kingdom will seek in negotiations.

London comes out the best with a drop of 1 percent in GDP growth staying in the single market, a drop of 2 percent under the trade-deal scenario, and a drop of 3.5 percent with no deal.

For ₹10, he would provide both medicine and injection to the patients. "So we are also mapping truck drivers", he said. The therapy involves a combination of anti-retroviral drugs to suppress HIV and stop its progression.

The Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman Tom Brake said: "This report confirms that every region and nation will be damaged by Brexit". They are still keeping no deal on the table despite how crippling it would be to the regional economy.

At the Tory party's annual Black and White Ball in London, Mrs May told the assembled donors, celebrities and politicians: "Ever since the British people delivered their vote in the referendum, I have had no doubts about what our new relationship with the European Union must mean for the United Kingdom. They should be allowed a vote on the final deal and a chance to exit from Brexit".

The latest leak came as the British prime minister Theresa May met her Brexit "war cabinet" to discuss Ireland and immigration as the government seeks to agree an approach to the next phase of negotiations with the EU.

Hawkins House continued to deepen cooperation with cross-border stakeholders and the Department of Health in Northern Ireland (NI), officials told the Committee. "We will continue working closely with the commission to agree a legally binding text for the commitments made in December", she said.

A government spokesperson described the report as 'provisional internal analysis, part of a broad ongoing programme of analysis, ' with further work in progress.

"We are seeking an unprecedented, comprehensive and ambitious economic partnership - one that works for all parts of the UK. We are not expecting a no deal scenario".
