NYC’s high school graduation rate hits record high

"Our kids are graduating high school and going to college at record rates, while dropping out less than ever before", he added.

Across the state, Education Commissioner Mary Ellen Elia says the current rate for English language learners or ELLs has decreased to just over 26%.

State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia said the graduation rates marked steady progress - up almost 12 percentage points over 10 years - but highlighted persistent differences between black and Hispanic students and their white classmates.

Nearly three-quarters of students at New York City high schools are graduating in four years, according to statistics released Wednesday by the city.

Dropout rates also hit a historic low previous year, dipping by 0.6 points to 7.8 percent citywide. Across the state, the difference was about 20 percentage points.

The State Education Department released graduation rates for the 2013 freshman class, and Rochester still falls behind the other Big 5 schools with a 51.9% graduation rate. "We're not meeting the needs of the 4,000-some kids who aren't graduating".

"Our graduation and dropout rates continue to improve steadily and show that we're on the right track", Farina said in a prepared statement.

The Bronx had the highest dropout rate at 11.7 percent, followed by Brooklyn at 7.4, Manhattan at 7.3, Queens at 6.4 and Staten Island at 6.

Ronald Koeman "proud" to take on Holland coaching post

Once again, 79.7 percent of eligible students graduated in 2017.

She also pointed to a troubling trend among students classified as "English language learners", whose graduation rates have slid over the past three years and whose drop-out rates have increased.

And in Yonkers, it exceeded the statewide rate for the first time: 82.8 percent, up 4.5 percentage points. That's compared with 80 percent of black and 63 percent of Hispanic or Latino students.

There also remains a stark difference in the graduation rates between students' economic background both in Chautauqua County and throughout NY state.

For other districts around Westchester County - where the county-wide graduation rate was 88 percent this year, up slightly from 87 percent in 2016 - the results were mixed.

Of Idaho's larger high schools, 10 graduated more than 90 percent of their students - Eagle (West Ada), Madison, Hillcrest (Bonneville), Rocky Mountain (West Ada), Timberline (Boise), Highland (Pocatell0), Lake City (Coeur d'Alene), Boise and Capital (Boise).

But the graduation rates were a reminder of the inequity in the school system, he said, as half of the schools are above the state average for graduation rates and about half are below.

"With an extra year or two of high school, the graduation rates for these students increase, as well as the achievement rates between black and Hispanic students and their white peers narrowed", Elia said.
