England provide first test as Ronald Koeman is announced as Netherlands manager
The Netherlands have officially announced the appointment of Ronald Koeman as their new manager.
He replaces Dick Advocaat, who oversaw the country's unsuccessful World Cup qualification campaign for Russian Federation this summer.
Having retired from playing in 1997, that was Koeman's first coaching job, assisting head coach Guus Hiddink as the Oranje finished fourth at the World Cup the following year.
After that World Cup Koeman became assistant of Louis van Gaal at FC Barcelona and his first stint as head coach was at Dutch club Vitesse, followed by Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ, Feyenoord, Southampton and Everton. The team failed to qualify for both Euro 2016 and the World Cup in 2018, with the path of internal coaching progression left in tatters. Koeman's mission is simple: build a new team and qualify for Euro 2020.
"I am really excited and really proud", Koeman said at his introductory press conference.
Koeman, who earned 78 caps for the Netherlands, succeeds Dick Advocaat, who had been brought in midway through a year ago after the sacking of Danny Blind in March. "We need a system to get the best out of our players and to get an advantage over our opponents. I am looking forward to the forthcoming years as national team coach".
Koeman, 54, has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in October after a string of defeats saw the Toffees fall into the relegation zone.
