Frasier actor John Mahoney has died at age 77 his manager has announced

John Mahoney, who played the cantankerous but much-loved Martin Crane in the long-running sitcom Frasier, has died aged 77.

He then moved to the U.S. after the war and made a career teaching.

"John Mahoney was a fixture on the Chicago stage", Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in remembrance.

Fellow Steppenwolf actor Gary Sinise said it was "a great pleasure to know him and work with him".

The Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago said Mahoney, who was a member of the ensemble for 39 years, died Sunday due to complications from cancer while in hospice care.

Mahoney was born in Blackpool, England, in 1940 but moved to IL after WWII.

After a brief stint in the United States army, Mahoney became an English teacher, and later the editor of a medical journal.

Natalie Portman's New 'SNL' Rap Is Crazy Vulgar and Super Funny
The video ends with Portman stabbing her interviewer in the forehead with a " Time's Up " pin and throwing him out of the window. Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch also dropped to play colonial-era activists in a sketch about annoying Super Bowl fans.

He never married throughout his life, despite having several relationships. Mahoney received two Emmy nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, and a SAG award for his work on the show.

Ironically, Mahoney actually appeared in the final season of Cheers before joining Frasier, but it was in a different role - a jingle writer named Sy Flembeck who actually shared a scene with Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer).

He started his acting career in the 1970s, and joined the Steppenwolf Theatre. Mahoney starred in the Broadway revival of the play Prelude to a Kiss, as well as the plays Better Late and The Outgoing Tide at the Northlight Theatre in IL.

In 1986, he won a Tony Award for his role in John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves.

Mahoney made his film debut in Barry Levinson's 1987 film Tin Men and was featured as the White Sox manager in Eight Men Out. He also played Roy, a waiter in the city adopted by three female entertainment industry veterans, during two runs (2011 and 2014) of the sitcom Hot in Cleveland.

The Coen Brothers chose Mahoney for the role of WP Mayhew in Barton Fink (1992) because of his resemblance to William Faulkner.

Mahoney's last TV appearance was in Foyle's War in 2015, where he played Andrew Del Mar.
