Multiple injuries feared after train crashes and derails in South Carolina

An Amtrak train apparently was traveling on the wrong track before it crashed into a parked CSX Corp freight train in SC on Sunday, leaving at least two people dead and scores more injured. Eight crew members were on the Amtrak train along with 139 passengers.

Lexington Sheriff department said on Twitter that 50 people had been transferred to hospital, and that officers were on the scene, with local Red Cross volunteers also attending.

Authorities estimated some 5,000 gallons of fuel were spilled, however, the spillage poses "no threat to the public at the time", Lexington County spokeman Harrison Cahill told CNN. It said people with questions about the accident should contact: 1.800.523.9101.

The Amtrak train had seven passenger cars and one locomotive, while the CSX train had two locomotives and 34 empty autorack cars.

In his words, CSX had opened the arrow to the side track, where the passenger train departed from the main line and crashed into the stopped freight train. This is the third crash involving an Amtrak train in less than three months.

According to Coroner Fisher, Mr. Michael Cella, 36, of Orange Park, Florida and Mr. Michael Kempf, 54, of Savannah, Georgia were the conductor and engineer, respectively, of the Amtrak train.

One train vehicle completely flipped over and crushed. On Jan. 31, a train carrying Republican members of Congress to a West Virginia retreat collided with a garbage truck.
