'A cesspool of funky flu': ER nurse goes on epic rant about flu season
After a 12-hour night shift, nurse Katherine Lockler of Milton, Florida, was so frustrated with the ways some people have handled the flu outbreak that she recorded a Facebook video on Saturday from her vehicle titled "After Work Thoughts", in which she highlighted the increasing risk of catching the flu and also shared some useful advice to avoid getting yourself, and other people sick.
To start: "Wash your stinkin' hands so you don't get all your babies sick", she said.
"It's fantastic to watch how many people come through the emergency room, sneeze in their hand, and I watch no one grab the hand sanitizer that's only every three feet in the ER", she said.
In a phone interview on Wednesday, Lockler, who said she's professionally dealt with people for very almost 18 years, utilized a real-life example to feature a portion of the recklessness she said she's seen this flu season. So please don't bring your team in.
Lockler goes on to share ER horror stories, like the father who let his baby to crawl on the floor, and the softball coach who brought his whole team. "And if you don't have what I would call a true emergency, this would not be the time to come to the emergency room".
"It's awesome how many people have no Common Sense!"
That was last weekend and the video has since gone viral, racking up over 5.2 million views.
In an interview with TCPalm, Lockler gave another example to expose some of the foolish business she's seen this flu season in the ER. Don't you know that the otherwise well-intentioned adults are bringing their toddlers and softball teams into "a cesspool of funky flu at the ER" right now? "I'm gonna' teach ya'll a magic trick - it's awesome".
"Right now we have up to 25 to 30 patients sitting for hours in the emergency room waiting room and some of them are not true emergencies but they're waiting along with the flu right next to them", Lockler explains.
Lockler's tone is sarcastic - she demonstrates the elbow sneezing in "slow motion" at one point - while still being informative about preventing the spread of flu. "Because guess what? You just got maybe 15 new vectors, or carriers of the flu, by them all walking in".
"Also, rather than the father getting what a nurse of 10 years is imparting to him, he stated, 'Eh, it's no major ordeal, it'll construct his safe framework.' So there's an absence of comprehension and an absence of enthusiasm for recognizing what to do to secure themselves some of the time".
The number of people visiting doctors with flu-like symptoms has risen to 6.6 per cent, which is reportedly the highest level of activity recorded since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic (which peaked at 7.7 per cent). "We're putting ourselves into the thick of some nasty germs to help".
