Russia concerned over clashes in Yemen — Foreign Ministry

The clashes came after separatist forces seized government buildings in what Yemen's prime minister called an attempted coup. Aden Yemen

The militants claimed the attack in a statement circulated on social media, saying it was in retaliation for abuses by USA and UAE-backed forces.

The fighting has pitted forces loyal to the war-torn country's president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, against separatists who want an independent southern Yemeni state.

"When the coalition launched its war in 2015 they said it was aimed at preserving a united Yemen, this is no longer the case". The separatist forces did not enter the palace itself and were stopped by troops who have been guarding the palace for the past months.

Fighting began after the Southern Transitional Council, the main group of the Southern Resistance Forces, ordered Hadi to fire his prime minister and his Cabinet. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity under regulations.

Hadi s government has accused the separatists of attempting a coup in Aden, opening yet another front in the country s devastating conflict.

Hadi went on to describe the council as "southern separatists".

The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) said late on Monday that at least 36 people have been killed and 185 others wounded in two days of fighting in Aden.

A source in the city told Al Jazeera that the SRF had now gained control of most of Aden and fought their way to the gates of Al-Mashaiq Palace where Yemen's government resides. Saudi air defense forces reportedly blocked and shot down a missile fired at the location in November past year.

The Coalition sought joint work with the legitimate Yemeni parties to liberate the country from enemies and avoid any reasons that may lead to division and split, and undermining the State's institutions in Yemen. Over the past year, the UAE has trained and armed its own forces in Yemen, including the separatists, in a direct challenge to Hadi.

The current battle lines in Yemen are close to the same as the old border between North and South Yemen, and the rise of the secessionists might provide an opportunity to end the disastrous Saudi War by simply allowing Yemen to divide in half once again.

The Saudi-led Arab Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen announced that it has been watching with regret over the past two days the manner in which none of the parties has responded to the Coalition's calls for calm.

The lack of any progress on political negotiations, Mr. Dujarric said, "only piles onto the misery of the Yemeni people".

The UAE-backed anti-terror campaign has dislodged Al Qaeda militants from several villages in Abyan and in the neighbouring Shabwa province, with more than 50 of them arrested and imprisoned in Aden.

Tribesmen in the area say the attack started with a mortar round fired at the checkpoint, followed by heavy gunfire.
