EasyJet CEO cuts pay to match female predecessor

Low-cost airline easyJet's new boss Johan Lundgren has asked the board to cut his pay to the same level as predecessor Dame Carolyn McCall

EasyJet boss Johan Lundgren

EasyJet's chief executive is voluntarily taking a £34,000 pay cut so that his salary matches that of his predecessor in a bid to address the gender pay gap.

"To show my personal commitment, I have asked the board to reduce my pay to match that of Carolyn's when she was at EasyJet". The former CEO, Carolyn McCall, left the company after eight years with a salary of £706,000 (approximately $990,730) - a gap of almost five percent.

"At easyJet we are absolutely committed to giving equal pay and equal opportunity for women and men", Lundgren said in a statement. Easyjet has already gone further than other airlines in trying to attract more women into a career as a pilot.

Only 5 percent of easyJet's pilots are women, but the airline is looking to hire women for 20 percent of its new pilot jobs by 2020.

EasyJet said in a statement that the new CEO's remuneration would be identical to McCall's in all other respects.

Mauricio Pochettino shares his half-time message to Tottenham team
It's easy to talk about that but I think we missed a massive opportunity today, to show that we really want to win some trophies. West Ham were without several injured first-choice players and an upset always looked on the cards.

Gracie said that when she raised the issue of unequal pay to her bosses, the BBC offered her a raise that was still less than what her male colleagues made.

McCall joined British broadcaster ITV (ITVPY) as CEO at the start of 2018, earning a base annual salary of £900,000 ($1.3 million). "Like all airlines, pilots are a large proportion of EasyJet's employees, who receive a higher payout than or communities, and most importantly, 94% of pilots are men".

The overall gender pay gap at easyJet is 51.7%.

She was appointed dame for services to the aviation industry in 2016. That is why three years ago easyJet launched our Amy Johnson Initiative to encourage more women to enter the pilot profession. Last year, the airline recruited 49% female new entrant co-pilots, which marked a 48% rise on the previous year.

McCall had been credited with transforming the airline and was making £706,000 when she left the carrier last November after eight years in the job, so that's a cut of almost five per cent and A$60,000.
