South Korea: At least 33 killed in hospital fire, dozens injured

Miryang is about 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

The fire occurred around 7:30 Sejong Hospital's emergency room and quickly spread to other parts of the hospital, according to authorities. Smoke was seen billowing from windows on higher floors and most of the victims were believed to have died from inhaling the toxic gas.

Hospital director Song Byeong-cheol said the six-storey hospital did not have a sprinkler system and was not large enough to require one under the law.

All the dead were in the hospital, Choi said.

The hospital was reported to have treated patients suffering mainly from cerebrovascular disease and stroke.

The Interior and Safety Minister Kim Boo-kyum flew to the area to oversee the response operations.
