Xiaomi beats Samsung to become India's top smartphone maker with 27% market share: Canalys
South Korean Electronics giant, Samsung which has been holding the Top rank in Smartphone segment in India for the last six years, has lost the crown to Chinese company, Xiaomi.
The claim is backed up by numbers from both Counterpoint and Canalys, two market research firms that aggregate data from the Indian market. Both Canalys and Counterpoint Research have released their findings for the fourth quarter of a year ago, and they both agree that Xiaomi is now the number one smartphone manufacturer in India.
As such, with both the companies nearly evenly tied in the world's second largest smartphone market, it would be interesting to see who emerges at the top in 2018. Based on data by GfK (a German research firm), Samsung says it has 45% of the value market share and 40% of the volume share. He said the key reason for its success lies in the autonomy it granted its Indian unit, letting it run the business locally.
The partnership has been reported after Xiaomi India filed requests with the regulators to enter with more products in the Indian market. Additionally, Xiaomi co-founder, Wang Chuan, who also leads the company's Mi TV product line, visited India past year to take stock of the average Indian consumer's TV viewing habits.
Samsung, which has assumed the tentpole position among smartphone makers for years in the country, refuted the findings by Canalys and Counterpoint Wednesday evening.
"Samsung's loss comes from its inability to transform its low-priced product portfolio", Rushabh Doshi, an analyst at the research firm, said in a report.
Xiaomi has replaced Samsung as the top smartphone supplier in India in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Samsung, the world's biggest smartphone company, has been knocked off the top spot in India's red-hot market. With a share of 8.2 million units in the 30 million smartphones, Xiaomi beat Samsung which now holds a 25 percent market share with 7.3 million units. Despite its ability to offer better margins and funding to the offline channel, consumer demand for Samsung's devices has been weak. "We owe our undisputed leadership to the love and trust of millions of our consumers in India".
The overall mobile phone shipments have grown 37% and the total smartphone shipments grew around 12%, with feature phones growing at a 55% rate during the fourth quarter of this year.
Experts attributed Xiaomi's growth to its impressive product portfolio in the sub Rs. 15,000 smartphone segment which also forms the bulk of smartphone sales in the country. More importantly, Samsung is India's "Most Trusted" brand.
According to Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint, Xiaomi ended 2017 on a strong momentum.
