Ferrari plans an electric supercar that would compete with Tesla

Ferrari Is Planning to Bring an Electric Supercar to Market
Ferrari will make a battery-electric supercar to snatch some market share and attention away from Tesla, the dominant player in the luxury electric vehicle industry, CEO Sergio Marchionne told reporters at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
"I was in Maranello for the last few days and the guys are busy but they seem too relaxed", Fiat and Ferrari president Marchionne is quoted as saying at the Detroit motor show. While the Italian carmaker equips some cars with hybrid technology, Marchionne once called the idea of a completely electric Ferrari "almost an obscene concept". People are amazed at what Tesla did with a supercar: "I'm not trying to minimize what Elon did but I think it's doable by all of us".
Marchionne went on to say that Ferrari is compelled to launching an electric auto because of the speed at which powertrain technology is changing. Somehow, it feels unlikely that Musk himself is going to want one of these any time soon, but once his own midnight cherry Tesla roadster is launched into orbit around Mars, he is going to need something to drive around in. So far, the 65-year-old Marchionne hasn't invested as much as some other traditional automakers in electrification or self-driving cars, favoring partnerships with companies like Google's Waymo while focusing first on strengthening brands.
Mr. Marchionne did not deny rumors that he has big plans in F1 for Alfa Romeo, as the Italian brand becomes Sauber's title sponsor this year. Ferrari is targeting annual sales exceeding a self-imposed 10,000-car limit that until now has enabled it to operate under less-stringent fuel-economy rules, people familiar with the matter said in August. The goal now is to hold on to that feel of exclusivity while also doubling profits by 2022.
