The body requested $2.96 billion for humanitarian aid to respond to an ever-broadening crisis in the country - where war, looming starvation and cholera have killed thousands.

"The coalition will coordinate".

It added that it aimed to increase monthly import to Yemen from 1.1 million metric tons past year to 1.4 million metric tons and that it seeks to open land, sea and air access to Yemen to ensure the increase in delivery.

It will also increase the capacities of Yemeni ports to receive aid and cargo shipments, and set up 17 "safe-passage corridors" for humanitarian groups.

The announcement comes amid mounting worldwide criticism of the Saudi-led coalition's role in the war, particularly civilian deaths caused by airstrikes as well as coalition control of Yemen's ports, which are a lifeline for imports.

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday deposited $2bn in Yemen's central bank after the Yemeni prime minister made a public plea for funds to prop up the currency and help stave off hunger.

The total number of projectiles fired towards Saudi Arabia is nearing 100 since the war, which has killed more than 10,000 people, began.

The $2.96-billion will be used to respond to an ever-broadening crisis in Yemen, where war, looming starvation and cholera have killed thousands and put millions of lives at risk.

"We are backing a professionally planned and detailed humanitarian mission with military power and precision to guarantee that the humanitarian aid reaches the people who need it to lift their suffering", spokesman Col Turki Malki said in a statement.

According to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), almost two million children are out of school, and 1.8 million children under the age of five are acutely malnourished - including 400,000 suffering from severe acute malnutrition and are 10 times more likely to die if they do not receive medical treatment.

It also focuses on needs of internally displaced people, returnees and host communities in a more sustainable manner and on working with national institutions, added OCHA.

In 2017, global donors provided 1.65 billion of the Dollars 2.34 billion requested by the United Nations and humanitarian partners in Yemen.
