I Can't Believe How Stupid Facebook's News Feed Update Is
Trump appropriated the term soon after by using it on his critics in the media, but Facebook has remained under scrutiny for how users can be exposed to news and news-related content, a portion of which was apparently produced with help from Russians trying to influence the election.
Facebook said earlier this month it would be shifting its News Feed algorithms to prioritize The News Feed is currently created to prioritize relevant content from friends and family, but now will highlight content that people are likely to regardless if it comes from a peer or a company.
Earlier this month, Facebook announced major changes to the News Feed to prioritize updates from friends and family while de-emphasizing news and brands, a move aimed at fostering what CEO Mark Zuckerberg called "meaningful interaction".
"There's too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today", Zuckerberg said in a post.
"As part of our ongoing quality surveys, we will now ask people whether they're familiar with a news source and, if so, whether they trust that source", he added.
Also past year, U.S. Republican lawmakers expressed concern that Facebook was suppressing stories from conservative news sources. "This data will help to inform ranking in News Feed".
"We decided that having the community determine which sources are broadly trusted would be most objective". That shift has empowered Facebook, but has been challenging for many news organizations and put the company in an uncomfortable position of deciding what news users should see. Publications that do not score highly as trusted by the community may see a decrease. Zuckerberg said he will leave that to the site's users.
But as a reminder, you can filter your News Feed by going to your Facebook home page and selecting "Most Recent" instead of "Top" from the dropdown bar next to the News Feed, in order to view posts chronologically rather than in an order that's been algorithmically sorted for you.
These aren't foolproof remedies for avoiding fake and biased sources on Facebook - but as Facebook continues to make changes to its News Feed, they may become increasingly important. Now Facebook wants to return to its social media roots and be all about individuals talking with each other.
