That's more than twice the 17 flu-related deaths reported in the entire 2016-17 season, health officials said.

Across Oklahoma, there have been 23 deaths and 1022 hospitalizations due to flu.

While counties are required to report when people younger than 18 have died of the flu, adult flu deaths are not required to be reported.

"An early season does not equate to a more severe season", she said, adding that this year the number of hospitalizations and deaths are about four weeks ahead of last year's.

Individuals who are experiencing flu-like symptoms are urged to contact their physician or visit an urgent care facility to keep emergency rooms available for people who are critically ill. Almost 80% of confirmed flu cases are Type A, H3N2, with Type A, H1N1 and Type B, taking 10 percent (each) of the total cases.

Symptoms include fever or chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and tiredness.

Public Health Department spokesman John Ricci said "it is hard if not impossible" to pinpoint when flu season will peak.

"Unfortunately, as in years past, we are seeing increasing flu activity and the heartbreaking consequences it can have", said Indiana State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG.
