Gauteng police on high alert after EFF supporters trash several H&M stores
World-renowned clothing brand H&M recently came under fire after an item in their United Kingdom online lookbook featuring a young Black male model wearing a hoodie labeled "coolest monkey in the jungle" went viral.
Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters protested across the country this morning and social media was full of images of shops being smashed up.
In one video, claimed to have been taken at the Menlyn Park store, one of red shirted activists is seen trashing displays, kicking over and pulling down clothes rails as well as pushing over mannequins.
The firm's spokesperson, Amelia-May Woudstra, said the company was sorry for the ad, "We sincerely apologize for offending customers with an image of a printed hooded top that was published on selected global online channels".
However, EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu congratulated members for physically confronting racism.
"At the East Rand Mall the protesters managed to enter the shop and stole several items".
"We are not going to allow anyone to use the colour of our skin to humiliate us, to exclude us", he added.
It is worth noting that the boy's mother, according to The Blaze, has told people to "Get Over It" She says the sweatshirt was not racist.
"We can't accept that H&M, after what they have done, is coming now and saying we apologise".
"The time of apologies for racism are over", he said.
EFF protestors also targeted H&M stores in Cape Town, including the store in Canal Walk. When H&M opened its first store in South Africa in 2015, a local shopper questioned the lack of black models in its campaign.
More than one celebrity has cut their ties with H&M over the hoodie row.
"We have taken down the image and we have removed the garment", the statement said.
"I'm deeply offended and will not be working with [H&M] anymore", he tweeted.
