Valencia announce signing of Francis Coquelin from Arsenal on contract until 2022

Coquelin joins Valencia, Wenger confirms

The 26-year-old Frenchman moves to Spain for an undisclosed fee with an 80 million euros (96.4 million dollars) buy-out clause attached to his new contract.

Arsene Wenger has admitted he sanctioned Coquelin's £12m departure to the La Liga club because he could not offer the midfielder regular game time. I think it's an excellent opportunity for me and I'm very grateful.

"First of all the best way to replace him now is to get Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil back", Wenger said after Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

Speaking about Coquelin's move, he told Sky Sports: 'I'm happy for him because he's going to go to a team that is challenging at the minute in a very hard league to win.

Coquelin departs with FA Cup winners' medals for in 2015 and 2017 - and may be heading back to the Champions League.

Coquelin spoke with Arsenal teammates Shkodran Mustafi, Nacho Monreal, Hector Bellerin and Santi Cazorla about the move with all four having nothing but positives to give.

The player could make his debut when Valencia face Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.

"They all told me that Valencia is a great city and the club is big, so I'm very grateful to be here", he said.

"What he is doing at the moment will help him develop as a player because he plays in a different position but at some stage I will play him in at defensive midfield".
