Ford adds diesel engine to F-150 for the first time
09 January 2018, 02:05 | Frank Carlson
Ford's F-150 receives an efficient and newly-developed Power Stroke turbodiesel V6 for 2018
If you want to know why truck enthusiasts love diesels, look no further than the newly-released specs for the 2018 Ford F-150 Power Stroke diesel: 440 lb-ft of torque, an 11,400 pound towing capacity, a 2,020 pound payload rating, and an estimated 30 MPG on the highway. A first for Ford in the half-ton truck category, the addition of a compression ignition engine is expected to add incremental sales to a truck that has been the country's bestselling pickup for 41 straight years, and bestselling vehicle of any kind for 36.
"The more you tow and the longer you haul, the more you'll appreciate its class-leading towing and payload capacity and how efficient it is at the pump".
Those looking to get the Ford F-150 Diesel can start placing an order for one starting this month.
WIth a new diesel under the hood, the 2018 F-150 diesel offers a towing capacity of 11,400 pounds, a payload capacity of 2,020 pounds and a projected EPA-estimated rating of 30 miles per hour highway.
To make the engine strong but light, Dearborn built the new Power Stroke V6 around the same compacted-graphite iron block construction and forged-steel crank used in the 2.7-liter EcoBoost. Ford is hoping to gain some customers from rivals Ram and Nissan, which both offer diesels in their full-size trucks.
Fleet customers can order the diesel F-150 in SuperCrew with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed and the SuperCab with the 6.5-foot bed.
Ford is pairing the engine with its SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission.

GM (Chevrolet and GMC) offers a diesel (the 6.6-liter Duramax V8) in its HD trucks, while the Toyota Tundra range is limited to gasoline engines, and does not include a heavy-duty model. David Felipe, vice president of global powertrains for Ford, said he expects 80 percent of diesel F-150 owners to tow with the truck. Deliveries will begin in the spring. In more moderate conditions, the engine control system uses a viscous coupler to back down the fan's load, and close the two shutters on the radiator for better aerodynamic efficiency, as well as reduced parasitic engine loss.
