4.4 magnitude earthquake in Berkeley rattles Bay Area residents

A 4.4 magnitude quake centered along a seismically active 5-mile stretch of Hayward fault near the UC-Berkeley campus and the historic Claremont Hotel jolted the Bay Area awake early Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A USGS official said the possibility of this morning's natural disaster being a foreshock to a larger quake is only about 5 percent.

But there's also a chance that this was a foreshock, a precursor to a larger quake. The natural disaster serves as an important reminder that the "Hayward Fault is ready to go", Knudson said.
