HP laptop batteries overheating leads to recall

HP recalls computer batteries over fire risk

HP Inc., is recalling 50,000 batteries for notebook computers and mobile workstations because there's a chance they could burst into flames. "We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries". "For this reason, it is extremely important to check whether your battery is affected".

Customers should go to www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 to see if their battery is included in the recall.

This follows eight reports of lithium-ion batteries overheating and/or melting, and in one case causing a first-degree burn to someone's hand, with three further cases citing resulting property damage (presumably caused by fire, of course) to the tune of $4,500.

Should you stay away from romaine lettuce?
But food safety experts at Consumer Reports went further, advising everyone to stay away from romaine lettuce as a precaution. The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued warnings about the outbreak.

These batteries were included with select units sold around the world between December 2015 and December 2017, according to the company.

Batteries sold as replacement or accessories for the HP "XBook Studio G4" mobile workstation are also named in the commission report.

The computer maker said the troublesome batteries were sold with the following products over the last two years: Envy, HP11, HP Pavilion, HP ProBook, HP Studio G3 and ZBook models. You can download a tool to verify if your battery is susceptible to the issue here. When enabled on an affected system, the battery will be discharged and then can't be charged (at least without disabling the safety mode).
