Report Capers out as Packers defensive coordinator after season

It's a big change after one of the league's most successful teams missed the playoffs and finished with a losing record for the first time since 2008.

Even with kicking General Manager Ted Thompson upstairs after 14 years, the Packers took a step toward creating some organizational stability, and they did it quietly. Capers spent nine years running the Packers' defense, though he hasn't had a top-10 unit since 2010. Schneider is a Wisconsin native and has previously worked in the Packers organization on two other occasions.

This news comes from Rob Demovsky of ESPN, who reported Tuesday that McCarthy got a one-year extension at some point "during the season". He replaced Mike Sherman as GM for the Packers in 2005.

However, it seems the one constant that will remain is head coach Mike McCarthy. Together, they won Super Bowl XLV, the Packers' first title since Super Bowl XXXI.

Murphy has several in-house candidates to consider as Thompson's replacement.

A former linebacker for the Houston Oilers, Thompson broke into scouting with the Packers under Hall of Fame GM Ron Wolf in 1992.

Thompson has been the team's general manager, executive vice president and director of football operations since 2005. Murphy informed the committee on Monday that the team would conduct a search for a new GM.
