Gaming disorder to be named a mental health condition for the first time

Gaming Disorder Now Real? Why You Shouldn't Get Your Health News from Forbes

The World Health Organization have plans to add a "gaming disorder" to their list of recognized mental health conditions. Video gaming will be in the International Classification of Diseases Manual.

Do you love video games?

"Gaming is highly addictive", said ESET security specialist Mark James, "and it is no wonder so many respondents from our study admit to playing them for so long".

Specifically, the draft's language states that gaming behavior could be a disorder if it meets three characteristics: if a person loses control over their gaming habits, if they start to prioritize gaming over many other interests or activities, and if they continue playing despite clear negative consequences.

Can excessive video gaming become a health hazard?

Brian Vigneault died at age 35 while participating in an online video game marathon that was raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

World Health Organization spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said that game disorder is not limited to time spent in front of screens.

This does not mean that gaming disorder is a done deal: The caveats note that the draft is not final, is updated on a daily basis, and is not yet approved by WHO.

Michigan Lottery: Mega Millions Jackpot climbs to $277 million
The next Lotto 47 drawing is also Wednesday night, December 27 at 7:29 p.m. with a jackpot of $1.2 million. The winning numbers in Saturday's Powerball drawing were 44-15-1-13-3 and Powerball 25.

Rather than include it as a mental disorder, the association held a work group, which concluded internet gaming disorder should be included as a subtype in its Emerging Measures and Models section.

Some studies suggest that the same brain circuits involved in drug addiction may also be activated when individuals are engrossed in Internet gaming.

On the positive side, research has shown that game playing can relieve stress, improve problem-solving abilities, and enhance traits like eye-hand coordination.

"In fact, I asked my son today, 'Do you think you're addicted to video games?' And he said hmm, maybe", Prince said.

"People do what they do to escape or avoid pain and we find that that's true with video games as well", Mental health counselor Bobbi Burks says.

Standard treatment for technology-associated addictive behaviour, he said, involves quantifying gaming patterns, assessing dysfunctions and motivating patients to initially change lifestyles to reduce gaming durations.
