President Donald Trump is about to formally accuse North Korea of a devastating global attack

WannaCry cyberattack: US says it has evidence North Korea was 'directly responsible'

The US has blamed North Korea for the rampant WannaCry ransomware that infected more than 200,000 victims in around 150 countries.

In an article published in the Wall Street Journal, Donald Trump's homeland security adviser Tom Bossert now claims North Korea was "directly responsible" for an attack that "cost billions".

While Bossert condemned North Korea for the attack, the adviser said that there is little the US can do to punish the secretive nation's government, emphasizing that the not viewing an attack on private computers as an act of war.

But Mr Napolitano warned the WannaCry malware attack could not justify full-out military action against North Korea as it did not constitute an "invasion" of United States territory. Whenever possible, we will work with partners, industry and allied governments, who share our market based values.

Bossert did not specify what evidence American officials have to blame North Korea, citing security issues, but he cited the country's prior attacks as revealing hallmarks of how Pyongyang and its network of hackers operates. We are not alone with our findings, either.

"Microsoft and Facebook and other major tech companies acted to disable a number of North Korean cyber exploits and disrupt their operations as the North Koreans were still infecting computers across the globe".

Japan OKs missile defence
The deployment of these systems is explained by the sharply increased missile threat from North Korea. Therefore the government decided that Cabinet approval is necessary to introduce Aegis Ashore.

Stopping malicious behavior like this starts with accountability.

Hacking may now account for one-third of cash-strapped North Korea's gross domestic product, Cybereason CISO Sam Curry tells me. Computers that were affected had not been updated with security patches that would have blocked the attack. Could we pinprick military response to destroy the hardware that they used to trigger the virus?

And Judge Napolitano said the rogue nation should expect a "pinprick military response" from the USA to destroy its hardware.

Ahead of the claims about North Korea being responsible for the WannaCry attack, on Monday, the United States military released photos of massive joint drills it underwent recently with its ally South Korea, and have called the exercise 'Warrior Strike IX'. "The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea is directly responsible", he said.

The Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon has confirmed North Korea was behind the WannaCry ransomware incident. Poor coding also led to new infections of WannaCry being blocked after a British security researcher accidentally found the equivalent of a kill switch. "WannaCry was indiscriminately reckless", Bossert further wrote. "It's the flawless currency for North Korea to be hoarding".

"Mr. Trump has already pulled many levers of pressure to address North Korea's unacceptable nuclear and missile developments, and we will continue to use our maximum pressure strategy to curb Pyongyang's ability to mount attacks, cyber or otherwise", Bossert said.
