Report | Islanders win bid to build arena at Belmont Park
The Islanders have reportedly been informed that their plan will be announced as the winning bid during a Wednesday press conference that will include NY governor Andrew Cuomo.
It's hardly the Dodgers going to Los Angeles, but another major sports franchise is leaving Brooklyn. It was sad. They were a big part of the identity and the culture of Long Island, and the Barclays Center is great, but they weren't on Long Island anymore.
The Islanders have reportedly been awarded the right to build a new arena for their team at the Belmont Park race track site. No date has been given for when the new arena will open. Another bid for the site which was not accepted was put in by the New York Football Club.
The move back to Long Island was music to the ears of captain John Tavares. The Islanders moved out of their previous home, the Nassau County Veterans Coliseum, in 2015, and now play in Brooklyn's Barclay's Center.
Joining the Islanders in the proposal is Oak View Group, whose investors include James Dolan's Madison Square Garden Co., which owns its namesake arena as well as the Knicks and Rangers, and Sterling Equities, which owns baseball's New York Mets.
The Islanders played at the Nassau Coliseum from its inception in 1972 until 2015, winning the Stanley Cup every year from 1980 to 1983.
"We have no Plan B", Ledecky said earlier this month.
The decision has come down to the New York Islanders and NYCFC of MLS, the final two bidders for the 43 acres.
Officials stopping short of confirming it but said it will create jobs and contribute to economic development while benefiting all taxpayers. A spokeswoman for Empire State Development, the state agency that controls the site, declined to comment.
Since moving into the basketball-focused Brooklyn facility three years ago after a 43-year run at Nassau Coliseum, the Islanders have faced many difficulties including poor ice conditions and bad sightlines for hockey fans.
Thousands stranded as power blackout hits Atlanta airport
Because the fire was in a tunnel "adjacent" to the backup cables, the fail-safe system was knocked out, too, Georgia Power said. While others in the airport were just simply overjoyed that their vacations got off to a better start.
Japan OKs missile defence
The deployment of these systems is explained by the sharply increased missile threat from North Korea. Therefore the government decided that Cabinet approval is necessary to introduce Aegis Ashore.
