It is reported the bodies of Barry and Honey Sherman were discovered in their basement in Toronto on Thursday.

Police have said that they are treating their deaths as "suspicious" but have not handed over the investigation to the homicide unit at this point.

Mr Sherman had set up the pharmaceutical company Apotex in 1974, stepping down as chief executive in 2012 but remaining executive chairman.

The mayor of Toronto John Tory through a prepared statement said he was heartbroken and shocked when he learned of the couple's death, noting the couple had made many contributions to the city.

"Sophie and I are saddened by news of the sudden passing of Barry and Honey Sherman", Trudeau said in a tweet.

According to Forbes, Sherman, 75, was the 12th richest man in Canada and ranked 660th among world's billionaires, with an estimated net worth of $3.2 billion, as recorded in March 2017.

Police said they learned of the deaths after responding to a midday (1700 GMT) medical call at the Sherman's home in an affluent section of northeast Toronto.

Despite the police withholding the identities of the bodies, many friends of the couple and a number of officials confirmed the news of their death. Reports say the couple were both found hanging from a railing near their indoor pool.

His breathtaking knock included a dozen sixes and 13 boundaries as he literally toyed with the opposition bowlers. Playing at Gwalior, Tendulkar was at his sublime best as he remained not out at 200 off 147 deliveries.

Hopkinson would not confirm that the bodies are of Barry Sherman and his wife Honey Sherman.

The Sherman family released a statement Saturday saying: "We urge the Toronto Police Service to conduct a thorough, intensive and objective criminal investigation, and urge the media to refrain from further reporting as to the cause of these tragic deaths until the investigation is completed".

"I am beyond words right now". "Incredible philanthropists, great leaders in health care".

"Today I am gutted by the loss of Honey and Barry Sherman".

One of the nation's wealthiest couples, they had given tens of millions of dollars to hospitals, universities and Jewish organisations and were fundraisers for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal party. They had four children.

Outside of the pharmaceutical business, the Shermans were also known for their philanthropy. For more than a decade, Barry Sherman had been involved in an acrimonious legal battle with three cousins and the widow of a fourth - sons of the uncle who instructed him in the generic-drug business that preceded Apotex.

Sherman's wife, Honey, was a member of the board of the Baycrest Foundation and the York University Foundation. She said that she last saw them two weeks ago, when they had an open house - and could not imagine anything like this happening to a pair she described as the "best neighbours" and the pride of the neighbourhood.

"At this point we are not now seeking a suspect", Toronto police homicide Det.
