Apple has made a deal with Ireland to pay its back taxes but the money will be held in escrow while it appeals an EU ruling

Last year, the European Commission ruled that Apple had taken part in an illegal deal with the Irish government and that the company owed around $14.5 billion in back taxes.

Apple has made a string of investments in the country over the last few years, and the Irish Government fears that the tax bill will affect jobs.

The European Commission ruled in 2016 that the tax arrangement was illegal under EU state aid rules, but Apple and Ireland have both appealed the order.

The EU's ruling also angered a number government leaders in Ireland, who filed their own appeal on the grounds that the ruling infringes on the nation's sovereignty and harms its ability to attract business.

"We expect the money will begin to be transmitted into the account from Apple across the first quarter of next year", he added before a meeting with the EU's Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager. This is necessary to defend the integrity of our tax system; to provide tax certainty to business; and to challenge the encroachment of European Union state aid rules into the sovereign Member State competence of taxation.

The European Commission ordered Apple to pay the sum previous year.

The BBC reports that Apple is paying the money into a so-called blocked "escrow" account and that Ireland is in the process of appealing the Commission's decision.

In a statement, Apple said that it remains confident the court will overturn the commission's decision once it has reviewed the evidence.

Ireland and Apple have reached an agreement that will see the technology giant start paying the EUR13bn (USD15.4bn) it is alleged to owe in back taxes.
