Ole Miss gets hit with additional bowl-ban year

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Ole Miss Rebels.

Former head coach Hugh Freeze, who resigned in July because of off-field issues, is also charged with failure to monitor his staff. The school had self-imposed a loss of 11, but the NCAA added 13 more.

They will have an addition one year bowl ban, in addition to the self-imposed one they are now serving, meaning no bowl games until 2019.

Additionally, the NCAA has lengthened Ole Miss' probation period to four years and struck every coach involved in the scandal with a show-cause, what basically amounts to being blackballed from college sports for an indefinite period of time.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions has extended Ole Miss' postseason ban for another year, among other penalties dealing with the 21 allegations against the football program.

Mississippi's football program won't participate in the postseason this year or in 2018 as part of the NCAA's sanctions levied against the school in the long-running rules violation case that included a charge of lack of institutional control.

The Committee on Infractions said the case was similar to other Ole Miss rules violations cases in 1986 and 1994 and that the school had an "unconstrained booster culture". A dozen boosters and six former staffers were implicated by the NCAA in arranging impermissible benefits, including cash payments, free auto rides to campus, free hotel rooms, food, and Rebels apparel from an Oxford-area sports merchandise store. An assistant coach and operations coordinator also acted unethically when they arranged the fraudulent ACT scores and arranged for a booster to provide housing and transportation to five prospects while they completed the necessary academic work to become eligible for competition.

Both administrators declined to offer details about the change, but Bjork added, "We strongly disagree with the tactics used by the enforcement staff to keep us isolated in the final months of the investigation". The school said the resignation was not in relation to the NCAA case. The 41-year-old led the Rebels to a respectable season, including an Egg Bowl win over rival Mississippi State last week. Matt Luke was named the permanent head coach on Sunday after serving on an interim basis throughout the 2017 season.
