The latest NCRB data for the year 2016 has registered a sharp spike in cases of rape against children
Another shocking fact from the report is that Chandigarh is third position when it comes to the crime against children, although the absolute number of cases fell from 271 in 2015 to 222 in 2016.
Major crimes like rape, kidnappings and abduction, crime against women and crime against children increased across the country by 2.6 per cent in 2016 over the previous year, the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) said in its latest report on Thursday. The state also ranked second in economic offences and cyber crime.
Uttar Pradesh accounted for 9.5 percent of total Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes reported in the country followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9 percent), Maharashtra (8.8 percent) and Kerala (8.7 percent), while Delhi reported the highest crime rate, or incidents per 100,000 persons at 974.9 followed by Kerala at 727.6 and Madhya Pradesh at 337.9 against the national average of 233.6.
Majority of cases under crimes against women were reported under "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" (32.6%) followed by "Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty" (25.0%), "Kidnaping & Abduction of Women" (19.0%) and "Rape" (11.5%).
According to the data, the IPC crimes have increased by 0.9 per cent (from 29,49,400 in 2015 to 29,75,711 in 2016) while SLL crimes increased by 5.4 per cent (from 17,61,276 in 2015 to 18,55,804 in 2016).
In the south, Karnataka figured on the list with 42 cases of communal violence while Kerala had 21 instances and Tamil Nadu had five communal incidents during the year 2016. Bengaluru topped the list for cyber crimes for the last two years.
Total 84,746 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty were reported in 2016. As per the data, only six cases of crimes against the elderly were registered in 2015, which increased to 56 in 2016. Mumbai also had the second highest number of rape cases, at 712 cases, after Delhi that had 1,996 cases. The numbers of cities followed a similar patter, with Lucknow reporting the highest number of atrocities reported among the 19 metropolitan cities, and Patna and Jaipur following.
A total of 1,11,569 children (41,175 males and 70,394 females) were reported missing in which maximum children missing were reported from West Bengal (15.1%) during 2016.
The NCRB report on crimes for the year 2016 has placed Mumbai first in offences against senior citizens and second, next to Delhi, in crimes against women as well as children.
Among the other states, Uttar Pradesh (UP) recorded the highest number of serious offences like murder.
In terms of kidnapping and abduction also, Delhi reported the maximum number of cases at 5,453 or 48.3 per cent in 2016 followed by Mumbai with 1,876 cases or 16.6 per cent, and Bengaluru with 879 cases or 7.8 per cent.
Mumbai also held third position in terms of total IPC crimes in 19 metropolitan cities.
