Apple's Spaceship better look out, Microsoft is modernizing its HQ too
At a time when space is at a premium and many companies are looking for room to grow, we recognize that our 500-acre campus in Redmond, Washington, is a unique asset.
As part of the upgrade project, Microsoft'sRedmond headquarters will get 18 additional buildings, as well as new sports fields, transportation investments worth $150 million, and public spaces.
Once complete, Microsoft's main campus will consist of 131 buildings with enough room to support its 47,000 existing employees and up to 8,000 more that it'll eventually hire.
MICROSOFT LIKES big campuses and it can not lie, which is why its re-building its Seattle headquarters to fit in an extra 8,000 workers. Our plans include a 2-acre open plaza that will fit up to 12,000 people, running and walking trails, facilities for soccer and cricket, and retail space.
Microsoft announced the plans for expansion via the Microsoft blog.
"Our goal is to build the most modern workplace, and create the best employee experience in our industry", Microsoft President Brad Smith said. Having been the bane of many Microsoft employee for their confusing corridors, it's unlikely they'll be missed.
In fact, the Redmond company is taking a fairly "new age" approach to its campus, touting it nearly as somewhere workers will not want to leave. The space will be divided into what it calls "team neighborhoods". But as its ongoing search for a second headquarters highlights in no uncertain terms, the space-constrained Puget Sound region has few large undeveloped areas appropriate for an expansion that would accommodate up to 50,000 workers-the number Amazon said it may someday employ at its HQ2. The 18 new buildings part of the overhaul will be Energy-Smart Buildings that utilize Azure to monitor the building system and energy usage optimization, according to the company. All vehicle parking will go underground, and in its place will spring up sports fields, a tree-lined boulevard, and a two-acre open plaza that can hold up to 12,000 people for events. This will connect with a planned Redmond Technology Transit Station where the Link Light Rail is expected to arrive in 2023.
