The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma to stay the release of Padmavati overseas and also ticked off "people holding public offices" for issuing statements about the movie as this could prejudice the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification). The top court, on the other hand, dismissed a plea demanding criminal prosecution of producers and director of "Padmavati" and criticized harshly the petitioner for filing a "frivolous petition".

According to reports, today, November 28, the Supreme Court dismissed the said plea on the grounds that it is the prerogative of the CBFC to censor and consequentially allow or ban a film to be aired inside or outside India.

Taking exception to people holding official positions making adverse comments about the film "Padmavati", a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud said: "We are governed by the rule of law".

"When matter is pending for CBFC's consideration, how can persons holding public offices comment on whether CBFC should issue certificate or not?" "That will prejudice the decision of the CBFC".

In the wake of protests, states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have said that they won't release the film till the controversy is resolved. Many Bollywood celebrities including Shabana Azmi, Hansal Mehta, Sonam Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and Twinkle Khanna have voiced their opinions while backing the film. There were rumours that Bhansali had added a dream sequence between Ranveer Singh who played Alauddin Khilji and Deepika Padukone who played Rani Padmini. The new release date is yet to be unveiled by the filmmakers. Various conservative fringe groups like the Karni Sena and people from the Rajput community have been protesting against Bhansali's magnum opus for twisting historical facts.
