Delhi Metro fare hike to be on auto mode next round likely on January
The latest data on Metro ridership has been obtained by news agency PTI through a right to information (RTI) query.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said the hike in fares will "kill the Delhi Metro" operations and questioned its objective of the transport facility.
The RTI revealed that the metro's daily average ridership dipped from 27.4 lakh in September to 24.2 lakh in October, translating to a decline of around 11 percent.
Citing that there are month-to-month variations, it pointed out that the daily ridership immediately after the fare hike on October 10 was "actually higher than prior to the fare hike". The fare hike lead to a rise of around Rs 10 for almost every distance slab.
Blue Line is considered Delhi's busiest Metro-route that stretches to a considerable distance of 50-km and connects Dwarka to Noida.
"Also, assessment on average ridership after fare hike should be made after few months".
DMRC effected the fare hike on 10 October, leading to a rise of around Rs 10 for almost every distance slab.
Opposing the hike in fares, Delhi Government has locked horns with the DMRC and Centre in the matter. The minimum fare is Rs 10 (up to 2 km), while the maximum fare is Rs 60 (beyond 32 km). However, considering the sharper decline this time, it may take a little while longer for the Delhi Metro to regain its passengers - whose presence is equally important for the corporation to have a healthier balance sheet.
