Drink up: Three cups of coffee a day 'may have health benefits'

Why drinking four cups of coffee a day could help you live longer

Coffee was also associated with a lower risk of several cancers, including prostate, endometrial, skin and liver cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes, gallstones and gout.

Previous research has indicated that coffee might be able to do everything from helping us live longer to making our workouts more effective; heck, according to one study, it might even help stave off dementia.

However, doctors warn that these findings aren't enough to advise those who aren't drinking coffee already to pick up the habit.Just that people who are already drinking that much don't necessarily need to stop.

They caution pregnant women and women at high risk of fractures should limit their coffee consumption.

The study conducted by researchers led by Robin Poole, a specialist registrar in public health at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, noticed greatest risk reduction for liver cirrhosis.

She also won two Olympic silver medals in doubles, in 1988 and 1996, and a singles bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games. I remember our hugs and our tears after my Wimbledon titles.

The studies used mainly observational data, providing lower quality evidence, so no firm conclusions could be drawn about cause and effect, but the findings do back up other recent reviews and studies of coffee intake. "There is a balance of risks in life, and the benefits of moderate consumption of coffee seem to outweigh the risks", he added.

And coffee drinkers may have healthier livers and better glucose control than non-coffee drinkers.

At present, the researchers said pinning down exactly how coffee might have a positive impact on health was "difficult". Increasing consumption to above three cups a day was not associated with harm, but the beneficial effect was less pronounced. We found that there was a lower risk of both conditions in people who drank more coffee. The latest study builds on that research but calls for more randomised controlled trials to further understand the correlation.

Coffee drinking during pregnancy is linked with low birth weight. This included lower risk of death from any causes, or getting heart disease. Should people start drinking coffee for health reasons?

But a year ago the World Health Organisation withdrew its previous warnings on the link between coffee and bladder cancer - and instead said that the drink could, in fact, help protect against certain cancers such as womb cancer and liver cancer.
