This was most striking with aggression - those who showed signs of alcohol dependence were six times more likely to say they felt aggression while drinking (adjusted odds ratio 6.41, 95% CI 5.79 to 7.09). Rum, Vodka and Gin were strongly associated with feelings of aggression, illness, sadness and restlessness.
But the authors have found that spirits do have an upside in that they are more likely to elicit feelings of energy and confidence than beer or wine.
Marketing plays into this, Professor Bellissaid: "There is a lot of content in alcohol promotion to suggest people will get those positive emotional responses they may be seeking". Each individual included in the study had drunk all the types of alcohol studied (spirits, beer, and red and white wine) in the last 12 months, so could comment on how each had affected their emotions.
Co-author Professor Mark Bellis, who is also Public Health Wales' director of policy, research and worldwide development, said: "For centuries, the history of rum, gin, vodka and other spirits has been laced with violence".
If you drink the hard stuff, you're much more likely to feel energized, confident, and sexy; those three emotions clocked in at 58.36 percent, 59.08 percent, and 42.42 percent, respectively.
The majority of spirit drinkers also reported feeling "energetic" while most red wine drinkers reported feeling "relaxed" and "tired".
Alcohol consumption has a long-term association in determining the mood of the person who consumes it. 53 percent of the people who took part in the survey revealed that they felt relaxed after drinking red wine. This study allowed us to get a fuller picture of the ups and downs people get from drinking, which drinks are linked with which emotions, and which groups are most at risk from some of the most concerning outcomes, such as feeling aggressive.
RG: Why do you think people associate different emotional responses with different types of alcohol? . It may be due to the nature of the drink, such as different ingredients, alcohol content, and the amounts consumed. These findings suggest that dependent drinkers may rely on alcohol to generate the positive emotions they associate with drinking, the researchers explained. "This can become a risky spiral, where drinking can be seen as a solution to emotional problems that it is actually aggravating".
Alcohol has a way of controlling its connoisseurs.
This study is useful in that it can help health campaigners understand why people choose a type of alcohol in a certain situation.
"It just doesn't work that great with alcoholism", Krakower said. As well as this, over a quarter of respondents also reported that their favourite "adult grape juice" often left them feeling a little bit frisky, if you know what I mean. Their observations, the scientists published in the edition of BMJ Open.
