FCC chair Ajit Pai
Under his proposal, "the FCC would simply require Internet service providers to be transparent about their practices so that consumers can buy the service plan that's best for them and entrepreneurs and other small businesses can have the technical information they need to innovate", Pai said in a statement. The rules, which the commission is expected to vote on at its December 14 meeting, would replace those Open Internet or Net neutrality rules, which prevented Internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking or throttling legal content users sought to access, as well as preventing ISPs from accepting payment to prioritize some data. Those who criticize the rules say undoing them is good for investment in broadband networks.
Under current laws, internet service providers must treat all internet content equally.
"Pai admitted in April, even before he launched this process, that he'd already made up his mind to unravel these popular protections and abandon the legally sound definition that makes Net Neutrality enforceable".
How do you feel about the end of net neutrality? "If Internet access providers can block some services and cut special deals that prioritize some companies' content over others, that would threaten the innovation that makes the Internet awesome".
A federal appeals court upheld the rules in 2016 after broadband providers sued.
"This move would likely lead to consumers paying higher prices for the internet access and speeds they have today", Jonathan Schwantes, senior policy counsel at Consumers Union, said in an emailed message.
The group praised Pai's decision to remove "antiquated, restrictive regulations" to "pave the way for broadband network investment, expansion and upgrades". Pai, a Republican, was installed by President Donald Trump. Trump has abandoned global trade deals, the landmark Paris climate accord and environmental protections, taken aim at the Iran nuclear accord and closer relations with Cuba, and sought repeal Obama's signature healthcare law.
"What Chairman Pai has proposed is risky and wrong, and he's going about it in the most incoherent and incompetent way possible".
"The FCC's net neutrality rules are working well for consumers, and we're disappointed in the proposal released today", said Google in a statement.
Federal regulators unveiled a plan Tuesday that would give Internet providers broad powers to determine what websites and online services their customers can see and use.
His plan also would eliminate the "internet conduct standard", which gave the FCC far-reaching discretion to prohibit internet service provider practices deemed to violate a list of factors and sought to address future discriminatory conduct.
"The administration is moving to destroy the openness and dynamism of the internet", Pelosi said in an email message.
