Excluding a handful of "multiple bias" incidents, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said 57.5 percent of all incidents a year ago were based on hate related to race, ethnicity or ancestry.
Religion-motivated crimes accounted for 21.0 percent of incidents, and crimes motivated by sexual orientation accounted for 17 percent of incidents. And Jews were targeted in more than half the 1,538 crimes that were motivated by religion. The number of participating agencies also varies from year to year.
In releasing the figures, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said hate crimes remain the "number one investigative priority" of its civil rights unit and pledged to continue collecting data on the problem.
"No person should have to fear being violently attacked because of who they are, what they believe, of how they worship", US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. And the number of anti-Muslim groups almost tripled, to 101 a year ago, from 34 in 2015, the SPLC said. Hate incidents increased from 203 in 2015 to 285 in 2016. Anti-Black hate crimes actually declined by three offenses. Anti-Jewish hate crimes, anti-Islamic hate crimes, and anti-Catholic hate crimes all saw various increases in 2016.
Dozens of cities with more than 100,000 residents either reported zero hate crimes or did not submit their hate crime data, according toananalysis by the Anti-Defamation League, a civil rights organization, which has called for better reporting. Crimes motivated by gender identity-bias accounted for 124 incidents.
