11 bodies recovered after boat capsizes in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh DGP Sambha Shiva Rao confirmed recovery of 11 bodies.

"The boat was overloaded with 38 people and a lot of them were not provided life jackets".

The ill-fated boat was being operated by a private company and was said to be on a trial run.

The incident comes days after at least 9 people were killed in similar incidents in Vaishali and Samastipur districts of Bihar.

Twenty people died in September when a boat packed with labourers capsized on the Yamuna river in northern India.

Tragedy struck after a boat carrying 38 people capsized at Ferry Ghat in Ibrahimpatnam area of the city on Sunday evening.

China Rajappa, who was supervising rescue operations at the accident spot, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. As many as 15 people were either rescued by local fishermen or swam to safety. Of them, 32 belonged to a walkers' association from Ongole in Prakasam district and six from Nellore. Bad light is believed to have hampered rescue operations.

Twelve persons have been rescued so far by the NDRF, fire personnel, police teams and local lifeguards.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who is in Kerala now, held a teleconference with the ministers and officials from the accident site itself.
