"The autonomous shuttle was testing today when it was grazed by a delivery truck downtown", the post stated. "Unfortunately the human element, the driver of the truck, didn't stop".
The bus, just minding its own business, stopped the moment it saw the truck but was sadly unable to avoid the rather considerable scraping it received.
While the shuttle remained out of service for the rest of the day, the tests are set to continue for the duration of the 12-month pilot in the downtown Innovation District, officials say. Within an hour, the shuttle was already involved in a crash.
The future is headed to Las Vegas in the form of a driverless, electric bus that will begin shuttling passengers along a half-mile downtown route beginning Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
The shuttle itself is made by French company Navyo and is the first self-driving shuttle bus to be introduced in the US. AAA partnered with the city of Las Vegas, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) and Keolis North America (Keolis), which will operate and maintain the NAVYA Arma fully electric shuttle.
A spokesman for the City of Las Vegas told the BBC: "A delivery truck was coming out of an alley". While the crash will undoubtedly stoke fear among the more paranoid, artificial intelligence-fearing crowd, the best way to prove the viability of self-driving vehicles is to get more of them on public roads where passengers and drivers alike can experience the technology.
The AAA Free Self-Driving shuttle, an Arma vehicle built by Navya that utilizes LIDAR technology and Global Positioning System, was on a test run yesterday in the Fremont East neighborhood when it was hit by a delivery truck.
